The potential of the fibre-reinforced composite encapsulation technology is mainly based on itsgreat flexibility in terms of design, making possible the manufacturing of products of different geometries and shapes.

BFIRST project faces the challenge of developing a portfolio of BIPV products that almost cover every possibility concerning building integration. The wide range of BIPV elements, with different geometries and shapes, evidence the huge potential of the technology.

VENTILATED FAÇADE

Lightweight ventilated façade with embedded crystalline silicon cells, designed as the external skin of a ventilated façade. The design combines flat areas with curved transitions, especially conceived for commercial or industrial buildings (i.e. headquarters).The installation solution is based on an adapted version of Hilti’s standard hanger solution.

ROOFING SHINGLE

Lightweight and monolithic composite roofing shingle.The geometry of the module combines flat and curved transitions, following the shape of a saw-tooth profile. When installed, it provides the aspect of the typical flat shingles used in the construction sector.

CURTAIN WALL

The design of the BIPV curtain wall was adapted to the dimensions of the curtain wall of the demonstration building (INGRID building, Bilbao). The configuration of the curtain wall will be updated to a triple glazing, placing the composite PV module between the two glass panes.

SKYLIGHT

The initial concept of the skylight considered a mobile system actively contributing to the heating and cooling demands of the building. However, the difficulties to find a suitable demonstration building totest the prototype led the consortium to decrease the scope. The final BIPV skylight will share the passive features of the original concept, but just playing the role of a fix BIPV system.

SHADING ELEMENT

A versatile shadowing system for façade integration has been designed, suitable for windows or balconies. The basic unit consist of a single PV cells string encapsulated within a fibre-reinforced matrix. The mechanical assembly of various basic unitsleads to a wide range of possible configurations, with shapes such as plane, wedge, canopy, folding screen, etc. It also allows introducing manual or automatic mobile mechanisms that change the orientation of the element depending of the current solar and demand conditions.
